Charlotte York was clearly the role of a lifetime for Kristin Davis, but taking the Sex and the City part has come with some minor hardships. Among them is the fact that, for close to 30 years now, people like to put the actress on the spot with the question: Does size matter?
And they’re not asking about carry-on luggage. (Which would be stupid — of course, it matters.) They are asking about the male sex organ, and people seem to think that because the season 1 finale of Sex and the City, “Oh Come All Ye Faithful,” featured a very frank discussion about this issue, it means that Davis, who was acting, is itching to weigh in.
“People still ask me about [it], which I find really annoying,” Davis kvetched on the most recent episode of Are You a Charlotte?, her infinitely entertaining Sex and the City rewatch podcast.
“People want to ask me, Kristen, can I represent for all women if size matters? It’s the most [high-] pressure question,” she continued, speaking with this week’s guest, actress Camilla Luddington, best known for playing Dr. Jo Wilson on Grey’s Anatomy, but beloved by burlesque-loving dorks throughout the multiverse for voicing Zatanna Zatara, the backward-talking illusionist in various DC Comics animated shows.
“No, let’s not do that,” Luddington chimed in.
“On talk shows people would ask me this. Like, for years. Don’t put this pressure on me, people!” Davis explained.
In the episode, Charlotte (Kim Cattrall) is having a crisis because her new boyfriend James, played by James Goodwin (one hell of a brave actor), comes equipped with more of a triple A battery than a Duralast 12 volt. There’s a celebrated scene in the bathroom of a club where Charlotte breaks down over it, then feels guilty. It’s highly entertaining, but maybe don’t watch this at work.
Luddington then cued her up: “I think your response should be your response on the show, which is…”
“How is he with his tongue?” Davis quoted, leading to a whole new conversation.
“I like that Charlotte says that, because you really don’t see that coming from her. Right?” Davis asked.

Davis later spoke up for diversity in bedroom preferences, by adding “one thing I do wanna say is that we should make some space for the fact that that’s not every woman’s thing.”
After a long pause, Luddington asked, “The tongue?”
“Yep,” Davis said, leading Luddington to give a peppy “sure!” which, to our ears anyway, sounded like someone being polite while thinking “what the heck is this lady saying?”
“I do think that men think that that’s what every woman wants,” Davis said.
“You think so?” Luddington asked.
“I do think that. I could be wrong,” Davis responded.
“Oh, interesting,” Luddington concluded. “Well, I’ve never asked that question of… all the men in the world.”

Elsewhere in the conversation, Davis reflected that, in the club bathroom scene, Charlotte compared James’ appendage to a miniature pickle.
“We call it a gherkin,” she remembered, adding, “I remember a lot of discussion about ‘What is a gherkin?’ Someone had to find one. Before we all had our smartphones… they had find one, show it to us.”
Here’s hoping whoever raced to the grocery store came back with an actual gherkin and not a cornichon!
