‘Full House’ child stars recall being asked ‘gross question’ about crushing on John Stamos

Plenty of Full House viewers probably had a crush on John Stamos, who played the hunky-but-sweet rocker Uncle Jesse on the popular TGIF sitcom. But Stamos’ young costars Andrea Barber and Jodie Sweetin were not among the enamored, thank you very much.

On a recent episode of their rewatch podcast How Rude, Tanneritos!, the actresses behind middle child Stephanie Tanner (Sweetin) and ever-present neighbor Kimmy Gibbler (Barber) addressed one of their least favorite questions about working on Full House.

“It’s like when people ask us in media interviews, they’re like, ‘Did you ever have a crush on John Stamos?'” Barber said. “Like, that is a gross question. No.”

Originally aired for eight seasons, from 1987 to 1995, Full House followed widowed father Danny Tanner (played by the late Bob Saget) as he raised his three daughters — DJ (Candace Cameron Bure), Stephanie, and Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen) — with the help of his brother-in-law, Jesse, and best friend, Joey (Dave Coulier).

Sweetin would have been 5 when the series premiered and 13 when it ended, while Barber was 11 when she first appeared and 18 by the time the finale aired. So they basically grew up hearing Jesse and the Rippers plays tunes like “Forever” and hearing Jesse’s catchphrase, “Have mercy!”

“They’re like our older brothers, and we do not think of them that way,” Barber said of Stamos and Coulier.

Sweetin agreed but made one change: “Not even older brothers. They’re like my uncles.”

Barber confirmed, “They are just our… they’re our buddies, and, yeah, this is kind of a weird question.”

The Full House cast members have long been exceedingly close, and they’ve stayed connected through a revival — Fuller House, which ran on Netflix from 2016 to 2020 — and through big events in their personal lives. They reacted as a group to Saget’s death in 2022, saying in a statement, “Thirty-five years ago, we came together as a TV family, but we became a real family. And now we grieve as a family.”

They’ve also rallied around Coulier following the November revelation that he’d been diagnosed with cancer.
