8 Summer Shorts Trends That Will Convince You to Try Something New This Season

Looking good and feeling good don’t have to be mutually exclusive, and this summer’s short trends are proof of that. If you’ve ever declared yourself “not a shorts person” because you feel like this warm-weather garment is uncomfy or unflattering, this season’s popular fare might just change your mind. Ahead, personal stylists dish on the top summer shorts trends of 2025. And they might just inspire you to change things up a bit.

These are not your boyfriend’s boxer shorts. “These boxer-inspired shorts are unexpectedly cute and offer a fresh twist on loungewear. And I’ll admit, I was a slow adopter to this trend, but now I’m fully on board,” says Hannah Swenson, a personal stylist and eyebobs collaborator. “It’s the ultimate way to embrace the ‘cozy style movement’ without sacrificing an ounce of fashion.”

We’ve been asking for pockets for a long time, and the style overlords are finally starting to deliver. One of summer’s big shorts trends is the patch pocket short, which weaves in the also-trending nautical aesthetic. “Patch pocket shorts are popping up everywhere and in all fabrics—you’ll find them in denim, linen, and cotton,” says Dianne Boyer, a certified personal stylist and founder of Dianne In Style. “I like to highlight the pockets with a patch pocket short, so I style them with a cropped or tucked shirt with a belt to show them off.” For extra flair, she says to look for patch pockets with fun details, like buttons or contrasting trim.

Cargo shorts enjoyed quite the 1990s heyday, and they’re officially making a comeback. “This short lends itself to a more casual look, so I would suggest a tee—perhaps the wildly popular graphic rocker tees that are so popular right now—and a strappy sandal,” says Jennifer Johnson, stylist and founder of True Fashionistas. She recommends styles with less fabric to make them a little more tailored-looking, which tends to be more flattering.

Those who dislike the “short shorts” can rejoice—bermuda shorts are officially trending this season. “While we’re seeing extremes on both ends—micro, mini, and tight versus long and loose, longline and bermuda shorts are quickly becoming a go-to for their blend of comfort and style,” Swenson says. “Pair an oversized or baggy piece with something more fitted—like a simple white tank—to create visual balance.” Finish the look with a heeled sandal for a simple and chic upgrade.

A close cousin to the boxer short, the bloomer short brings a distinct, feminine twist. Better yet, they’re light and breezy, making them a go-to for the hottest summer days. “While boxers borrow from menswear, bloomers channel vintage charm,” Boyer tells us. “Inspired by historical undergarments, they’re soft, frilly, and full of personality, making them a playful, fashion-forward addition to your summer wardrobe.”

We’re seeing lots of new fabrics take the lead in the shorts game this summer, but denim is still a do. However, Boyer says that it all comes down to the details. “Out are the neatly cuffed styles, and in are the cut-off and raw hem styles—especially for shorter styles,” she says. “With a raw hem short, I like to wear a more fitted or graphic tee for a more casual look. This keeps the outfit light and casual.” Styling tip: To update the trend even further, try a knee-length baggy jort.

Yep, you can wear shorts to the office. You just need to find the right pair and style it accordingly. Enter: suit shorts, which takes the shorts trend and makes it suitable for your 9-5. “A nice button down shirt and a pair of kitten heels will make this short trend really work for the office,” Johnson says. “To take this look into the evening, ditch the kitten heels for a pair of sneakers—perfect for happy hour or a baseball game—or opt for a bigger heel for a fancy dinner.

With relaxed tailoring back on the agenda, linen shorts are making a major comeback. As one of the most breathable textures you can sport in the dead of summer, linen is extremely comfortable and is exactly what you’ll want to reach for when the temperatures start climbing.
