We don’t often dream of labor—but if we do, it’s about ditching the office for a beach in Thailand or vineyard in Italy. Countries with digital nomad visas offer the best of both worlds for remote workers who want to chase their dreams of living abroad without giving up their nine-to-five.
Digital nomad visas are exactly what they sound like: permits that allow remote workers to live and work in a foreign country for an extended period of time, generally from six months to a year. (Some, like Thailand’s digital nomad visa, can be continually renewed for up to five years.) There are currently 68 countries that offer visas for foreign remote workers, and the list keeps growing. Recent additions include the Philippines, New Zealand, Kenya, and Thailand.
It can be difficult to navigate all the different visa options for digital nomads, especially as they each have different names and application requirements. To help narrow it down, Global Citizen Solutions, a boutique investment migration firm that specializes in providing second residency and citizenship solutions, analyzed five key differentiators in a recent report ranking the top digital nomad visas for Americans: visa costs, visa benefits, quality of life, economics, and the technology and innovation within the host country.
Europe was recognized as the leading region for digital nomads, with 9 out of the top 10 spots on the list going to countries like Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, and Estonia, recognized for their “robust infrastructure, favorable visa policies, and pathways to citizenship.” South America also stood out, with countries like Ecuador and Brazil offering a high quality of life relative to the cost of living.
Here, we’ve provided the full list of 68 countries that currently offer digital nomad visas, in addition to a breakdown of what it takes to quality for programs from the top 10 countries ranked in Global Citizen Solutions’ Global Digital Nomad Report.
