The common name of this pretty perennial—hummingbird mint—probably gives a clue as to how popular agastache is for hummingbirds. “It’s the perfect plant for bringing hummingbirds, along with other pollinators, to the garden,” says Megan McConnell, horticulturist and plant information director at Monrovia. The tiny tube flowers grow massed on tall stalks, perfect for hummingbirds to sip.

These cousins to foxglove and other garden favorites make an unexpected addition to a cottage garden. “The compact habit makes this an excellent choice for borders, rock gardens, and containers,” McConnell says. “The tube-shaped flowers attract hummingbirds to the garden and have a long vase life in arrangements.” It’s also a drought-tolerant plant that can handle drier spots.

If you’re looking for a grander hummingbird magnet, hibiscus will be a perfect pick. “Another great, unexpected choice is the hibiscus, which produces loads of large, long-lasting flowers that attract pollinators,” McConnell says. “This selection is loved by hummingbirds and humans because it adds tropical color to containers or the landscape.”
