10 Interior Design Choices You’ll Never Regret, According to Pro Decorators

Whether you’re undertaking a full home renovation or simply refreshing a single room, the number of decisions can feel overwhelming. Maybe you’ve fallen in love with a trend on TikTok or have always dreamed of painting your dining room pink—but in many cases, these long-term commitments aren’t cheap, so you want to be absolutely certain. That’s why opting for a timeless aesthetic is a decision you’re unlikely to regret. But what truly defines a timeless look? We asked designers what they think—according to the decor pros, here are ten decorating choices that will never go out of style.

Antique and Vintage Pieces

Interior designer Jennifer Hunter says that if you want a space to feel timeless, opt for vintage furniture and decor over trendy new pieces. “Always incorporate antique and vintage pieces into the design to keep the space from feeling so new,” she says. “This will help create those layers that keep the room looking timeless.” Keep in mind this doesn’t mean buying an expensive antique chest or scouring local auctions. Your grandmother’s jewelry box or a thrift store find can just as easily fit the bill.

A Mix of Patterns

Whether it’s saying no to that matching sofa, loveseat, accent chair, or identical pillows on the couch, incorporating a variety of patterns can help make a space timeless. “Do not make a room feel matchy-matchy,” Hunter says. “Instead, opt for pattern play, different textures, and a variety of materials. When everything is too perfect, it feels as if the room was designed in a vacuum. You want the space to feel collected over time.” While mixing patterns can feel a little intimidating, it’s not as much of a challenge as many believe it to be—the trick is to make sure they all have a cohesive color scheme.

Cabana Stripes

Not sure what pattern to go with? It’s hard to go wrong with cabana stripes, according to interior designer Audrey Frances Doty. “Cabana stripes evoke a sense of casual elegance, reminiscent of seaside retreats and outdoor lounging,” she says. “The reason cabana stripes are timeless is their versatility. They can be adapted to various room types, from beach homes to urban spaces. This bold pattern adds visual interest and an airy, fresh vibe, yet remains sophisticated and classic.”

Stainless Steel Appliances

Sure, there might be something interesting about that mint green refrigerator, but Doty says for a timeless look (especially in an expensive room like the kitchen), it’s best to choose stainless steel. “Stainless steel appliances are a go-to because of their sleek, polished look that complements nearly every style,” she explains. “They are also highly durable, easy to maintain, and versatile. Stainless steel appliances provide a neutral, high-end aesthetic that works well with both contemporary and traditional interiors.”

White Paint

While there are many neutral paint choices out there, Doty notes that white will always be the most timeless option—because it checks every box. “White paint is undoubtedly one of the most classic and versatile choices in interior design,” she says. “It reflects light, making rooms appear larger and brighter, and provides a neutral backdrop for other design elements.”

White is also one of the most versatile design choices, so no matter what you do with the rest of the room, this hue has you covered. “The timeless quality of white comes from its flexibility—it pairs with nearly every other color, material, and design style,” Doty says. “I love to use white walls as a backdrop to showcase my clients’ extensive art and antique collections.”

Wood Tables

Want to buy a table and keep it for the foreseeable future? Designer Susan Petrie advises adding that wood table to your shopping cart. “They are versatile, sturdy, and stand the test of time,” she says. “Whether you are a traditionalist or a modernist, the shape, size, and finish may vary, but they all take on a unique grain and age gracefully. Even if they accidentally get scratched or scuffed, they build character…accidents can sometimes create memories during meals.” However, there’s a big difference between character and damage. If necessary, consider adding a protective glass piece on top of your wood table. It’s relatively inexpensive and will help your investment last much longer.

Plants

Whether you are already a certified plant parent or just an aspiring one, designer Nicole Cole shares that houseplants are always a favorite and safe choice when it comes to enhancing any space. Don’t hold back when it comes to adding the drama with big leaves and pretty pots. “Think medium to large, sculptural plants like monsteras, alocasias, or ferns,” she suggests. “Find an interesting pot to put them in and showcase them on a pedestal or antique stool to give them a sense of importance.” If your home doesn’t get a lot of light or your thumb isn’t quite as green as your intentions, opt for quality faux plants instead—no one will know the difference except you.

Mohair

Designer Taryn Bickley says mohair is just as timeless as it is comfy. “I will never deviate from a lush mohair fabric when I’m reupholstering occasional chairs, a settee, or a bench,” she says. “This fabric is incredibly soft, similar to velvet, yet surprisingly durable and easy to clean. It’s ideal for any family- or pet-friendly environment and the perfect textural accent in a room full of neutrals.”

Natural Materials

Mother Nature knows best, says designer Regan Billingsley. “Natural materials like honed marble countertops, rich walnut wood, or handwoven linen drapery bring lasting beauty.” So if you aren’t quite sure about something, if you can find it in nature, you’re unlikely to regret your choice.

Decor That Feels Like You

Lastly, if you genuinely connect with an object or style, Billingsley says it will always feel timeless in your home. “Using your favorite color on the walls can ground a space with a sense of familiarity, while a well-loved vintage rug adds warmth and history,” she explains. “When your surroundings reflect your personality and values, you’re never out of style.”
